A forced marriage is intentionally forcing another to marry against their will or deceiving someone to go to another country for a specific purpose and then forcing them to marry. A forced marriage is conducted without valid consent of one or both parties.
Marriage is any religious or civil ceremony of marriage recognised by the customs of the parties to it.
An offence is committed if the marriage goes ahead or not.
Where there has been a forced marriage there is often criminal behaviour attached, which can include kidnap, abduction, false imprisonment, administration of drugs to control the victim or rape.
Coercion is used to push the victim into acting against their will. There can be emotional abuse to both the victim and extended family both in the UK and the country of origin.
