SANDS- Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity

(Stillbirth and neonatal death charity)

Every day in the UK 15 babies die before, during or soon after birth.

Losing a baby is something most people never even think about, bit is all too frequent, devastating parents and affecting wider family members, friends and colleagues.

SANDS key aim is to raise awareness of baby loss and to support anyone effected by the death of a baby whether recent or many years ago. Most of the volunteers in SANDS have lost babies themselves and so realise the importance of supporting and information.

SANDS work closely with the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford & the QEQM in Margate.

They run monthly friendly and relaxed support groups, which are led by trained volunteers. Anyone can go along, and it provides an opportunity for parents, family and friends to meet with others that have a shared experience.

SANDS also offer

  • telephone, face to face and email support.
  • memory boxes and memory items, which are provided free.
  • provide specialist equipment & support to bereavement suites.
  • provide training to the NHS and other staff
  • take every opportunity to get out and raise awareness
  • provide a range of free leaflets including topics of saying goodbye, booklets for children, grandparents, fathers, employers and colleagues.

Their website offers lots of information and useful links.

SANDS also run the Ashford, Kent baby memorial garden, which opened in 2013 after local volunteers raised over £30,000. The garden is in the center of Ashford and is open to anyone. Name tiles recording babies’ names are also available for a one off fee.
